The Survey

In a survey (released 2008) conducted by the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) showed that less than half of 1% of Filipinos is investing in Philippine stock market. According to the survey, there were 430,681 accounts being maintained for Filipino investors by PSE trading participants in 2007. These accounts represented not even 1/2 of 1 percent of our 89 million population. What is happening here?

Of the total, only 103,412 or just a little over 1/10 of 1 percent of Filipinos were considered active or involved in at least one trade in a year. In contrast, other Asian nations have high involvement in their respective stock markets.

Putting things in perspective, below are some estimated numbers:

  • Singapore - 33%
  • Japan - 25%
  • Australia - 25%
  • Malaysia - 18%
  • Hong Kong - 17%
  • Korea - 10%
  • Philippines - 0.1%

The Effort

The PSE website already contains much information that Filipino investors can use to aid them in making wise decisions in the buying and selling of stocks. Many others are also offering stock-related classroom training, newsletters, or websites.

Also in an effort to boost participation in the stock market, PSE has partnered with the Global News Network (GNN) to provide a stock market show that aims to educate Filipinos through live television and internet broadcast.

The GOAL

These has sparked our interest to help in “spreading the word” about the Philippine Stock Market. We believe that awareness and education of Filipinos are key components to increase participation in stock trading. The [dot] NEWBie website is another step in trying to achieve this. We want participation of 1%, 5%, 10%, or even higher. We will be happy even if we can just convert a few Filipinos to be stock market investors.

At [dot] NEWBie, we actually aim a considerable amount of change. But we need participation of fellow Filipinos who are already investors. Please contact through our contact form with any of the following.

  • What you think about this website
  • Any suggestions on this initiative
  • If you want to be included in our blogroll or exchange links

You can actually send us anything (even a simple hi or hello) so we know this website is being read by someone. We encourage comments (send a reply below) and participation so please bookmark this website and point your friends who you want to learn more about Philippine stocks. Enjoy investing.

  8. Great information about stock trading. I admit that I’ve been hesitant to try out trading because of the lack of information and the complexity involved in learning it.

I would love this site to be my number one stop for everything about stock trading but I am really annoyed by the huge ads you put right before your content. You can place ads in a more strategic way without sacrificing the user’s experience.

    Thank you.

  13. good new site to promote the stock market. my suggestion is that you feature links on this site to others that are also involved with investing, so that will make it easier for you to refer and share info with newbies.

  15. Very low because there are a lot of political noise, influencing stock prices eg BEL, unregulated insider trading, and unethical practices, low standards and unenforced rules compared to HK and Sing bourses, transparency issue, and many more. How can we trust our money to the PSE ?
